Contrary to what your neighbors in Michigan and Ohio think, snowbirds who flee south to the sun-drenched sands of Orange Beach or Gulf Shores are still susceptible to the common cold. Not to worry — faithful pharmacies on the Gulf, up in Foley and Lillian, and even on the Eastern Shore will sell you what you need — right over the counter.
Which medicines to buy and how to take them.
For pain, fever, and sore throat, buy Ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil.
1. Every 8 hours you may take 2 to 4 Ibuprofen pills of 200 mg. each. You may substitute Motrin or Advil for Ibuprofen, since they all have the same active ingredients.
(Do not take any of these drugs if you have had stomach ulcers.)
2. If you need medication between your 8-hour doses, you may take an extra-strength Tylenol — but wait 4 hours after taking the Ibuprofen.
For stuffy nose and to prevent drainage, buy Afrin Nose Spray.
Afrin opens your nose in minutes and keeps it open for 12 hours.
This spray also prevents the drainage that can cause sore throat, cough, or nausea.
Stop using Afrin after three (3) days.
Prolonged use can make you depend on it.
