Methadone – What’s the Risk?


Methadone is the killer in about 1 in 3 overdoses.

On the Increase

In 2009, about 5,000 patients died from methadone overdose, six times more than in 2003. Yet Methadone is a bit player among pain killers.

No Good for Pain

Thomas Frieden, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Disease Control said it: “Methadone is riskier than other prescription painkillers … and we don’t think it has a role in the treatment of acute pain.” [emphasis mine]

So Methadone kills a lot of people but kills only a little pain.
